Foundations and Futures of Indian Knowledge Systems
General submissions are welcome across all of Chirantan's subject areas - this inaugural call is not restricted to a single theme.
Indian Knowledge Systems have been continuously studied, practiced and renewed for millennia - in philosophy and logic, in medicine, in mathematics and astronomy, in governance and jurisprudence, in the arts, and in the sciences of agriculture, architecture and the self. That continuity is exactly what the word Chirantan (चिरन्तन) means: perennial, timeless, ever-renewing rather than merely old.
What has been comparatively rare is a peer-reviewed venue built specifically around this lens - one that takes Indian Knowledge Systems seriously as a field with its own disciplinary rigor, rather than folding it into a subtopic of area studies or a generic multidisciplinary mandate. India's National Education Policy 2020 has given this scholarship real institutional momentum; Chirantan exists to give it a rigorously reviewed, globally accessible home.
For its inaugural issue, Chirantan invites original research, review articles, case studies and short communications across all of its subject areas, along with creative and reflective work engaging IKS themes. We are especially interested in scholarship that puts traditional Indian knowledge in genuine dialogue with contemporary method, technology and global scholarly conversation - in both directions, without treating either side as merely decorative to the other. Submissions engaging genuinely interdisciplinary questions across two or more subject areas are especially welcome.
What we publish. Original research articles, review articles, case studies, short communications, book reviews, conference reports and Contemporary Scholarship - original research from any discipline in genuine dialogue with Indian intellectual and cultural traditions (Track B, double-blind peer review) - as well as poetry, short fiction, reflective essays, and Documentation & Exposition of oral, folk or philosophical traditions (Track A, editorial panel review). Every submission must substantively engage with Indian Knowledge Systems as a core lens or subject - this is a screening criterion, not a preference.
This is a deliberately fast first cycle - roughly two weeks for editorial screening and review between the submission deadline and notification, and under three weeks from notification to publication. These dates assume the journal's review pipeline performs as expected during its pre-launch pilot; any adjustment will be posted here and communicated to authors with pending submissions before it affects them.
