This paper is an attempt to study Re -Orientalism in Kiran Desai ’s Booker Prize winning novel The Inheritance of Loss and the reception of such a Re -Orientalist representation. According to Lisa Lau, Re -Orientalism is not propagated by Occidentals, but quite ironically by Orientals, especially , diasporic Oriental writers. Re -Orientalism distorts the representation of the Orient, consigning it again to a position of Otherness. Desai ’s portrayal of a poor India using stereotyped images, shallow characters and inauthentic language amounts to Re -Orientalism which can be attributed to her diasporic identity
